Essentially keep any shipment under $399 NZD or do a large shipment as $400 is the tipping point to pay GST (tax) and entry clearance fee which sets you back $100 and keeps growing.

Remember its calculated at the time of entry into the country and the exchange rate at the time - not when you brought the items (been stuck with that before)
